Does it come as a surprise that Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of his retirement for the third time in ten years to give the best male performance of the year? "There Will Be Blood" is the newest film from director Paul Thomas Anderson ("Magnolia", "Boogie Nights", etc.). I was sitting half way down in my seat the entire movie, which is what i do when i feel that intense wave of awe washing over me. Not only does this film explore the early beginnings of the oil industry, it also rips into the heart of the greediest bastard to grace the screen this year...or in many, i might say. Daniel Day- Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a self made oil man. A "family man," or so he says. The film follows him and his take over of a small California town. There is also an interesting little pact made between him and the towns "gifted" healer/young minister played with hell fire perfection by Paul Dano. The age old relationship between money/power and religious persuasion is a sight to behold.
Another dynamic that i was impressed by was the original music score by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Every note plays up and down like the soundtrack to some hell. You are shifting in your seat in anticipation for the next scene.
From Beginning to End "There Will Be Blood" grabs you and takes you for a dark and dangerous ride, and you have no idea where you will end up. But when you get there, you know it was worth it.
